I’ve alluded before to the fact that we are in the midst of a master bedroom reno…..it’s not quite done yet, so no big reveal (there will be one eventually yet), but last night, after almost two months in the guest room, we finally moved back in. Baby steps.
Cannot say how nice it was to sleep in my own bed, in my own room.
My room is still pretty disorganized, but one thing I have done to keep my jewellery under control is make this jewellery rack. I used to just have piles of necklaces and bracelets sitting everywhere, which was awful for a few reasons. First, I always forgot what I had. Second, the necklaces were always hopelessly tangled, so I couldn’t be bothered to wear them. Third, I lost stuff or couldn’t find what I wanted. And fourth, a lot of things were just not being worn.
This little project was super simple. I went down into hubby’s workshop and stole a melamine-covered board (any board would work, because you cover it). Next, I covered the board with a thin layer of batting and stapled the batting. Afterward, I covered with the fabric and stapled it. After that, I marked out the spots where I wanted to put my hooks, then par-hammered holes, and then screwed in the hooks. On the back, there’s just a piece of wire to hang, and some fuzzy felt feet to keep it flat on the wall.
It was a pretty simple project that took less than an afternoon, cost about $10 (cost of hooks, batting and fabric), and has been GREAT to help keep my stuff in check. Now that we’ve repainted our room, I don’t know that the fabric still goes, so I may make another one. Still, I love this so much more than any of the ones I’ve seen in stores, because this one is bigger (so you don’t have to pile 16 necklaces on each hook) and the price was right. And also, there are tons of pre-made necklace hangers that presume you only wear chokers, and as such are completely useless for organizing and hanging big statement necklaces. And last, I don’t have pierced ears, so have no need for earring organization (though there are lots of great earring organizers out there).
How do you keep your jewellery organized? Any cost effective ideas?
And note: I have chosen the spelling “jewellery” – I am aware there are other spellings, but this is an accepted one in Canadian English, and I like it.

This is the best one that I have seen in a while. I’m pinning it!

What a great idea, Leslie! I keep my jewelry in multiple small boxes at the moment, mostly from patisseries here in Paris – I can pack them tightly so they’re easy for travel and I save space. It’s pretty effective for everything except long necklaces. I don’t have any chains that are too thin, so I don’t usually deal with tangles, but I know it can’t be good for the pieces even so. I just may have to borrow this idea, I love the way it looks and it’s practical, too!

Great idea! This would make it really say to see what you have to chose form

I’m glad you guys liked this! I’m not a super handy person, but I love that this is easy, takes zero skill (I’ve never upholstered anything before) and it’s so easy to customize to a size and look that suits your space.
Ginny – it’s so much easier to see what I have, and every once in a while, I look through to figure out what I haven’t worn and likely won’t wear (depending on the condition, I usually pass it along to my eldest daughter who loves dressing up – she’s 4).
